Good question! Probably the most important thing to realize is that narcissists are so self centred that they are incapable of true, deep, feelings for others. Their definition of 'friend' is likely to be very different from yours. They come first, all the time. You should not take this personally. They can't help it.

It's probably best not to expect too much from a narcissist because you will inevitably be disappointed. You will probably need to keep reminding them that you are just as important as they are and that you have the same rights that they do. You will need to stand up for yourself when they talk over the top of you, interrupt, or otherwise treat you badly (which they invariably do). Go to your local craft store and purchase two bags of small half inch by half inch mirrored rhinestones and fabric glue. With an office appropriate outfit layed flat on the floor, carefully glue the mirrors to the front, back and sides of your outfit. Let dry for twelve hours. Wear this to work the next day, so that your narcissistic coworker can not only see himself instead of you from every angle, but also so that he knows that you know that he thinks he's the bee's knees. Optional: Decorate your high heels and your purse with tiny mirrors too. This also doubles as a great time saver because You can do your makeup or hair on the way to work while you're driving, instead of having to stand in front of an actual mirror, just keep looking at your sleeve or purse while on your way to work!
