Video clips (as all media) must be Imported into WMM (Windows Movie Maker). Video files must contain the one of the following file name extensions:
.asf, .avi, dvr-ms, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv
If the video file is formatted in one of those listed above, simply click on Import Media (top-left side of WMM program). Locate the video file you want to import, then click import.
If you have successfully imported the video, it will appear in the Imported Media pane.
You can then, drag the video into the Time-line or Storyboard of the program for editing.
