They are tough. I am assuming that you are reffering to a greenhouse situation. Because in nature, these little pests are controlled by mite predators, which are mites themselves. Indoors, it's a little more difficult and sometimes if it's really bad, you have to dump everything and sanitize and just start over.

First off, sanitation is paramount. Don't let anybody bring something over as a gift. Don't bring in anything in from a discount store unless you know it is bug free. If possible, grow everything from seed or at least bug-free cuttings.

If it's too late for that, then try soap solution sprays. Fog a solution of say 10% Dawn onto the plants and make sure to get 100% coverage. Repeat every two to three days because new eggs will be hatching out and the spray doesn't affect the eggs. Rinse and repeat. It may take two months or more.

If you try to use insecticides, you will kill any mite predators and the red mites will develope a resistance to the pesticide and you can't win that one.

If it's really bad, just start over. It will save you time.

Encouraging black ladybug beetles (Stethorus), pruning damaged foliage, removing broad-leafed weeds and leaf litter, and treating leafy undersides with home-made or store-bought sprays are ways to get rid of spider mites. The arachnids in question (Tetranychidae family) may be controlled with such home-made sprays as diluted castile soap; cinnamon, crushed fresh garlic, ground cloves, Italian seasoning; or rubbing alcohol. They likewise respond to such botanical pesticides as horticultural/neem oil against eggs at the summer rate of 2% as well as cinnamite (cinnamon oil) or pyrethrum against juvenile and mature stages.
