Separation of roots from stems, solarization of an area, and treatment with herbicides are ways to eliminate poison ivy. It will be important to don proper protective equipment, head to toe, when severing above-ground parts from life-sustaining liquids from the roots, spraying with appropriate Toxicodendron radicansplant-killers (amitrol, glyphosate, triclopyr, 2,4D) or weighting down small areas with sun-absorbent materials to bake the life out of the pesty plant.

  • Glyphosate is a herbicide that has been proven to be effective against poison ivy. Products including Roundup and KleenUp contain this herbicide. It is sprayed directly onto the leaves of the plant and is not absorbed by the soil. The leaves absorb the herbicide and carry the agent to the rest of the plant. To avoid killing desired plant life nearby, do not use too much. After a few days, you can remove the poison ivy. Remove the plant carefully and take the same precautions that you would if the plant were still alive. Although the plant is dead, the toxic oils are still present on the leaves, and one touch is all it takes to become infected with the poison.

Amitrole
  • Amitrole is a herbicide contained in two pesticide products called Amitrol-T and Weedazol. This herbicide works in the same manner as the herbicides previously mentioned. But it infiltrates the soil and prevents new growth of the plant for a certain period of time. Do not use this product around food crops or animals that graze on land that is affected by the poisonous weed.

Other Herbicides
  • Many other herbicides can remove poison ivy. Some of these include 2,4D, triclopyr and a mixture of 2,4D and triclopyr. These herbicides are present in products such as Weed-B-Gon, Jet Weeder, Garlon, Redeem, Brush-B-Gon, and Crossbow.

DO NOT use a weed killer. This will still leave you at risk later on for making contact with all the dead plants parts giving you the rash Even when dead the plant remains toxic to touch & will still give you the rash. Properly suit yourself up by protecting your outer body parts from making contact with any of this plants parts and manually remove and properly dispose of all plants parts.

Very carefully! :-) First suit up wearing a hazmat suit, nitrile gloves, respirator, and protective eye shields. Selective hand removal by manually digging and pulling out the pi vines with their roots still attached is only way to go. This method is least intrusive to the forest floor ecology. Dispose of all pi generated debris off to approved land fill. Never at any time burn this debris as breathing in the smoke fumes could end up killing you, or at very least land you inside hospital emergency room listed in critical condition.
