Upside down rainbows are called circumzenithal arcs. They are not caused by light refracting through water droplets like normal rainbows, the arc is a result of sunlight bending to create a spectrum of colour after reflecting off ice crystals high in the atmosphere.
It only appears when sunlight shines at a specific angle through thin cirrus clouds with ice crystals the size of grains of salt at a height of around 20,000 to 25,000 feet.
The ice particles must be in the right direction to refract the light and must be convex to the sun.
This is a rare sight so you are lucky to see one!
