Play Coins are obtained by walking around with your 3DS. One Play Coin is obtained for every 100 steps registered on the pedometer, to a maximum of 10 per day. You can have a maximum of 300 Play Coins at any time.

∙ 11y agoTo get Play Coins on your Nintendo 3DS System you will have to close your 3DS and walk with it. Walk for around 20 seconds and see how well synchronised your 3DS is. On the top screen (Top bar) you will see internet (Internet, Streetpass, Enabled, Disabled or Local). Next there will be a flashing Coin with a number next to it. This is how many play coins you have. Wait for 4 Seconds and see it move again, switching picture. This is how many Steps You have. Steps are to tell you how many steps you are away from obtaining a single Play Coin.
100 Steps - 1 Play Coin
200 Steps - 2 Play Coins
300 Steps - 3 Play Coins
........And so on........
The maximum amount of Play Coins the 3DS System can hold is 300. To use up Play Coins you can use them in games. StreetPass Mii Plaza (Puzzle Swap and StreetPass Quest), in Augumented Reality (AR) they can be used in Fishing or to purchase more options. Nintendo LetterBox (SwapNote) can use Play Coins for Stationary, the option of Sound Recording and Pictures.

∙ 7y agoYou can get them by adding your Pokémon to a gym your team controls, then going to the Shop screen and tapping the shield icon in the upper righthand corner. This, however, only gives you a few at a time, and only every 21 hours or so. You have to pay real money to get Pokécoins in greater quantities more quickly.
