My 1997 Aerostar 3.0 has sliding door closing problems and a friend of mine fixed his problems on a 1991 4.0. the parts look the same on both so maybe this will cover most years.
The door has three rollers, one top front, one bottom front and one middle back. There is supposed to be a plastic? Teflon? outer ring on these wheels and they disappear after a certain age. Once they are gone the door doesn't roll nicely and in my friends case drops slightly cause poor closing (the latch is now misaligned). The bottom support for the door may come into contact with the plastic carpeting on the step which will show wear marks very quickly.
The easiest solution is replace all the rollers but here in Canada, Ford wants $80 for the top, $60 for the middle and $50 for the bottom one. A junk yard may have them but due to the age-disappearing-trick, I am reluctant to try this.
If you want to get a good look. - with the door half open - pry off rubber stop at the end of the middle track (back of van above bumper - pry out rubber stop at the top track (at your head level, back of the door opening) - undo the bolt on the bottom track (down at the bottom, rides with the front of the door)
The door will now slide all the way back and out of the tracks. Two people is a good idea because it is heavy! One can take it out but two for putting it back because you can't see the tracks if you are holding the door by yourself :)
Please let me know if there are cheaper new(ish) rollers out there.
remove the screw and pull the old one off push the new one on and reinstall the screw!
How do you open sliding door on a 1996 Ford Aerostar Van that will not disengage?
I would rather have a sliding door. A sliding door offers unparalleled convenience and efficiency. Sliding glass doors are also better because they are easier to lock from the inside and you can see out of them because they double as a window.
Use the handle!
There are several resources you can use to find a new or used sliding side door back latch for a Ford Aerostar van. You can try searching in local junkyards or Craigslist for a used one. Alternatively, you can contact a dealership direct have them order one that is brand new.
This is not an easily undertaken project. If the sliding door is one known more commonly as a 'Pocket door' (slides into wall) you can do yourself a favor and employ a contractor as it becomes necessary to sometimes remove and replace a section of drywall to gain access for repair. If this door is a sliding closet door you should consult the manufacturer or their web site.
keys are locked in car ,how do I get inside a 1996 Chrysler Concorde
Many times if a door does not latch completely. If its the sliding door, could be the bottom door rollers are worn allowing the door to move.
Sell the car without power sliding door , and buy one with.
Mine is stuck too. I've tried everything imaginable and even asked another owner to show me his door when open so I could try to figure something out. Did you know that there is only one latch and that it is on the backe nd of the door, not the front?
