Phone around to hairdressers (higher end ones) to find out if they have digital imagery. This is a method where they will take your face on a computer and try out different hairstyles until you come across one you like (they can even show you what you would look like as a blond, redhead or brunette.)

Always insure you research what you like, pictures speak a thousand words! Use Google pictures and type in what you like, eg. short red, long curly etc. then print or take your laptop, Buy hair mags and take in pictures, even if you can't find exactly what you like look for small leads eg. I like that fringe, those highlights, that length, this colour etc.

Next always, always, always book in advance (great hairdressers will be booked, sometimes weeks in advance) if you don't, you will get the apprentice, not that apprentices are no good but experience counts for something.. a lot in my experience next be prepared to have a chat, don't forget its a relationship so make sure you go back a couple of times and chat before you start each time explain what you liked and what you found difficult, ask for styling tips, explain your styling routine, tools you use ask for advice and tips.... good luck an happy styling, oh also if you see someone with nice hair, ask for a recommendation....
