How do you find a birth record for the UK?

The simplest way to find birth records for England & Wales from 1837 to date is to go online and look at the indexes and find a Certificate index reference. Use this reference to order a birth certificate record from the General Register Office (GRO). You won't find the birth record itself online, but can order a copy.

You can view the GRO indexes online through several specialist organisations and websites, or you can view the indexes at a library or office in your area.

In order to get a birth certificate, you can contact the state's clerk of court, or the Bureau of Vital Statistics. You can acquire a certified copy of your own certificate, and even though it is a replacement birth certificate, it would still be the original certified copy. In order to obtain an original copy, you must turn in an application that includes your full name, your parent's full names, the location and date of birth, and the purpose of your search.
