There are several types of Bharatanatyam costumes (see http://bharatanatyam.co.uk/bharatanatyam.html ). Bharatanatyam dancers may wear a two-color temple dress with an open-and-close folded skirt. There is a sari-like top piece which wraps around the body. Jewelry that is worn include a gold plated belt, necklaces, bangles, large teardrop earrings, ankle bells, "moon and star" hair pieces, Rakodi, and a dangle piece above the bindi, which is called Tika or head set. Hair is usually braided into a long hair extension and flowers (orange and/or white) are placed around the bun on top of the braid.

For a visual, see this picture: http://www.ragamala.net/aparnaseated.jpg

hope this helps!
