Generally speaking, look for a radiowave-like icon where the network connection area in the task bar should be. If it has radio waves, you're connected to wifi.
The more technical answer would be to figure out what interface your wireless card uses, and then find it in the output of ifconfig. If it has an IP address there, it's connected. But the first one is much easier

This is a bit tricky. I was tempted to answer "Check whether your wireless is on". However, if you do "View wireless networks" you will not only seewhether your wireless is on, but alsothe school's SSID,what type it is andif it is protected plusyou will be given the option to connect to itand that makes it faster to connect to the school wireless network
There are numerous reasons for your laptop not to pick up your wireless connection. Check the following and see if they solve your problem. 0.5 Check if your wireless router is switched ON! 1. Check if your laptop has a wireless card in it (old models might not have). 2. Check whether your wireless network is hidden. If it is just set it to visible. 3. Check that you are in the range of the wireless network. 4. Check the network configuration of your laptop. 5. Check if the wireless adapter on your laptop is not disabled. 6. If any of these don't help call a technician :).
