Homeostasis defines as a mechanism which maintains a constant body environment for optimum body function.

Homeostasis is the balance inside your body. For example, when it's warm, you tend to sweat to cool your body and when it is cold, you tend to chatter and do other body movements to warm your body up. By doing those adjustments in those situations, you maintain your balanced body temperature and homeostasis.

All of our body functions, cells and tissues work only within a specific range of temperatures. If our bodies get too hot or cold, these functions can be impaired, or cease altogether. Homeostasis is the mechanism by which our body can detect a change in temperature from the norm, and work to warm us or cool us until it is back to normal.

Homeostasis is-

The tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, esp. as maintained by physiological processes.

Sorry I Don't know the importance of it Try to look it up on Google

Homeostasis is essentially an internal biological process in which the body maintains internal equilibrium. The variable that is being monitored in homeostasis is known as the variableor controlled variable. Any condition that causes any changes to the variable or "throws it off balance" in question is known as the stimulus (or stimuli for plural). A receptor detects the changes being made to the variable and will send or input information to the control center along the afferent pathway. The control center will analyze and interpret this data. After it determines the set point, it will send the effector to this set point via the efferent pathway and bring the variable back to a state of balance.

The effector will work in one of two ways, being either negative feedback (most cases) or positive feedback(some cases).

Negative feedback: the effector will reduce or eliminate the effect of the stimulus, thus returning the variable to a state of balance (homeostasis achieved).

Positive feedback: the effector will actually "push" or speed up the stimuli's effect to bring the variable back into its homeostatic state . This occurs in the cases of blood clotting and childbirth.

Negative feedback Example: Blood sugar

In the case of blood sugar regulation, the stimulus would be a drop in blood sugar due to a person skipping a meal. The pancreas receptors will detect the reduced blood sugar levels. The receptors will send a message to the beta-cells within the pancreas, which will release more glucagon. The glucagon will be sent to the liver, which will convert the glucagon to glucose (sugar). This newly converted glucose is sent into the bloodstream, thus returning the blood sugar levels back to a state of homeostatic balance.

Positive feedback example: Childbirth

During childbirth, the fetus will place pressure on the uterine wall. The nerve endings within the uterine wall will carry messages to the hypothalamus (in the brain). The hypothalamus will produce a hormone called oxytocin, which is ultimately secreted into the bloodstream by the posterior pituitary gland. Oxytocin will increase or intensify the strength of the uterine contractions, further pushing along the fetus until the childbirth process is completed (and homeostasis will be achieved).
