One good way is to ensure he (or she) is taking his meds. If he really is bi-polar (formerly known as manic-depressive), he should be under a doctor's care and taking the meds needed to control his illness. If he is already on medication, you must do everything in your power to encourage him to stay on them, even when he's "feeling great and doesn't need them." To do so is not nagging. You're saving your relationship -- and maybe HIS LIFE!

Answer:

As someone with Borderline Peronality Disorder I can only say that you will need to understand the condition to understand the BPD's behaviour. BPD will cause someone to be very needy of love and care and they will have such fears that they constantly question that love and care thus needing constant reassurance. When things are good you will be idolised, placed on a pedestal. However when the sensitive BPD person perceives a slight or feels unloved they can become aggressive and react strongly to their fear of abandonment. BPD sufferers are inately terrified of being abandoned. I agree with the comment below, we do suffer with mood swings and we do feel terribly empty. Our behaviour can be challenging. However, I find that if someone truly understands out behaviour and handles it it makes the borderliner feel safer and much more secure. There is a book called "Walking on Eggshells" I recommend you read..

------------------------------------

I assume that you may live with this person because they are related to you or are of some importance to you.

People with borderline personality disorder have frequent erratic mood swings, and reoccuring feelings of emptiness, they need constant love and care.

You must understand that people with this particular disorder are very dependant, but unlike dependent personality disorder when they feel wronged by someone instead of getting submissive, they get very hostile and angry towards the people they are closest too.

I hope that this person you live with has some sort of therapy, or medications to help treat the symptoms of borderline. This disorder is very tough to overcome and takes many years of psychotherapy. It is most likely that this person does not just have borderline and has one or more other mental disorders, because borderline is usually accompanied by something else.

Just remember that in the borderline's mind they really think that they are right when they accuse or get upset with you, they need alot of attention, and most cannot stand being separated from an important person in their life, they have a lack of object constancy and fear that the loved one may never return. They may also show signs of self-harm or suicidal tendencies, it is very important to watch out for these types of symptoms, they are very dangerous. The borderline is very impulsive and acts on the current situation rather than the whole picture when it comes to things.

You have to be a very understanding, patient, considerate, and caring person to be able to live with someone who has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder

But it is really important to talk with their doctor about a plan for overcoming the illness.

Depending on your country it is a combination of therapy (& medication)

and talk therapy treatments

The following therapies that will be described were effective at reducing core BPD symptoms (eg.emotional instability, irrational/intense anger, suicidal behavior, self -harm) & associated mental health problems (such as depression and anxiety)

According to a review of 28 randomised controlled trials called "Psychological therapies for people with borderline personality disorder"(Cochrane Library)

The most effective therapies (they have the most solid evidence) long-term treatments for BPD are:

1. DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) then

2 .MBT (Mentalization Based Therapy) (partial

hospitalization & outpatient)

3. SFT (Schema-Focused Therapy)

4. TFP (Transference-Focused Psychotherapy)

These following classes of drugs are put in the order that they probably cover the most symptoms.

Mood Stabilisers-(anticonvulsants)

Antipsychotics

Antidepressants

Omega-three fattyacid ethyl-eicosapentaenoic acid supplementation effectively treats hostilityand negative emotions in patients with moderate to severe BPD .Because omega-three supplements are relativelysafe, they should likely be used more frequently for treating BPD.

There are also other treatments such as self-care & complementary treatments, the chinese herb Yi-Gan San.

I am in the process of making a video about them, but a sneak preview can be found on my blog reducingourmentalillnesses1atatime.blogspot.com (see the post on Treatments for BPD) where a summary of what each treatment is & a chart with symptoms & the names of the medications that work the best for BPD as well as side effects and the biological/genetic causes of BPD.I also am going to update the short term therapies that help with BPD.

Hope that helps

PS: (This shouldn't be in the narcisim section as borderline personality disorder is not the same as narcistic personality disorder.)

i believe that when their disorder involves harming others in some way, like Narcissism,

which i think is an evil thing with a tag on it, it would be very hard if not impossible to cure

unless something major changed inside that person. the more you try to help someone

who doesn't have any normal empathy or sincere regard for others, the more they will

take advantage. that's the way they are or they wouldn't be doing it in the first place. a

lobotomy mabey. It may be you are right, but I don't believe that a lobotomy is the answer. The best answer is to get away from this crazy person and disengage with them. They have no regard for you and will feed off you until you are dead.

Working with a therapist to learn ways to cope and seeing a psychiatrist about possible medications that may help stabilize your moods. Most importantly in this disorder is talk therapy.

It depends a lot on the person. Some people need to be hospitalized while others just need to talk to a mental health professional, medication may also help
