It sounds like you want to work blo, or "back loop only". This will produce a ridge along the row when viewed from the right side of the work.

It is produced by working the double crochet stitches into the back loop only, of the single crochet stitches in the row below. Its very nice looking and if you work a swatch in the back loop only, and turn it on its side, you will see that it looks and stretches a bit like ribbing.

What does continue in pattern as established mean in crochet?

This will be a hypothetical crochet pattern here; Row 1: double crochet 3, single crochet three, double crochet 3. Repeat in pattern as established. Repeating in pattern as established basically means double crochet the double crochets and single crochet the single crochets. It means repeat whatever you did to make the stitch pattern over and over again to keep the pattern going. The hypothetical pattern I used below may have been for a wave but not sure. These "established patterns" can be one row or fifty rows. it just means work through each row and then once the one pattern repeat is finished (meaning you've worked all those fifty rows) then you start at row 1 again and work your way up. Hope that helps.

Can you substitute single crochet instead of half double crochet?

yes you can but you will need more yarn as you are going to need more rows to make the same size item .. The width will not be effected at all .. if you are making a blanket it is easy just continue till same length .. if you are making a garment you will have to adjust the pattern for the height differences .. for example they may say you need 20 rows for an armhole and you may need 28 rows ..

Where you can crochet for charities?

If you can crochet you can be your own charity. Just go into a retirement home near you. Ask if they have a resident that crochets. Or teach it or reteach it to some of the ole gals in the home. Bet there were some that did it when they were young. You could be having crochet time going on in a number of homes heck have a ball. You will be surprised at the ole folks. Crochet is becoming a lost type thing it seems. Get out and light a fire for crochet. That would be closer to teaching the man to fish so he can eat fish forever instead....of feeding him some fish then leaving him to starve. It seems you have a talent and a desire to pass it on. I commend you and wish you well. By the way. You don't crochet dish cloths do you? I had an 87 year old gal till last year, she passed on bless her that kept me in dish cloths. She made the best dish cloths I swear. Hand crochet. If you do maybe we can figure out how to contact on here.. lol I personaly admire someone who crochets. Keep it up... JIm

What does 'Chain 4 then make single turning chain' in a crochet pattern mean?

In crochet, because stitches have "height" (where in knitting stitch height isn't much of an issue), crocheters add chain stitches to the end of a row to add height, in order to begin the next row.So, in your instructions, chain 4, then make a single turning chain, would mean to add another chain, turn your work so that you could then begin crocheting the second row. You would then insert your hook into the second chain from the hook and crochet the next stitch (which is going to be a single crochet--sc--due to only using one turning chain)There is a standard turning chain number, depending on the stitch you are going to use in the next row. [the link shows how many turning chains for each crochet stitch].For a:slip stitch = 0 turning chainsingle crochet = 1 turning chainhalf double crochet = 2 turning chainsdouble crochet = 3 turning chainstriple crochet = 4 turning chainsand so on.You see that as the stitch height grows, so do the number of chain stitches in your turning chain.

What is dc crochet ch 1 dc in the same chain?

You do all of that in the same chain. Make a double crochet by wrapping the yarn over the hood and inserting it in the chain and pull the yarn through, wrap the yarn over the hook and pull it through two loops then wrap the yarn over the hook and pull it through the last two loops. Now chain one and do another double crochet but do it in the same chain instead of going to the next one.

How do you crochet letters onto a single crochet afghan?

The only way I know to crochet letters onto an already completed afghan would be to use surface stitching. Another method, which is not crochet but which would give a very nice look, would be to cross-stitch them on. This can be done on single crochet or tunisian crochet (afghan stitch). Another way to get letters on an afghan would be to crochet strands of chains or single crochet strips and shape them into the letters needed, then attach them to the ghan. That would give a 3-D effect.

How do you spell crocheing?

crochet I don't think there is a crocheting although the spell check didn't catch it just now. I have always heard I am going to do some crochet. Not I'm going to do some crocheting. But what do I know?

How do you join yarn skein for crochet?

The way I learned to join another yarn to my crochet project is to add the new yarn to the stitch you are doing, when there are two (2) loops of the stitch left on your hook. For example, I'm going to add new yarn to a double crochet project. So I would do my dc (double crochet) stitch by beginning with:yarn overinsert the hook into the next stitchyarn over hook againpull hook through stitchyarn over hook againnotice that you now have the last two loops on your hook, this is where you bring in your new yarn, grab new yarn with your hookpull through the last two loops remaining on your hookyou have now completed the dc stitchcontinue your project as written.

Is there a machine that will do crochet?

Not that I've ever heard of. If you think about the structure of crochet there would be two main problems with designing a machine to do crochet. First, knit stitches are basically loops pulled through, all neat in a row, not loops within loops and around loops and then through loops like crochet. The movement that creates knit stitches can be done by moving a hook in and out in and out in the same place, without moving or twisting the hook in any way. But that isn't true of crochet. Second, crochet fabrics are often circular or three dimensional whereas the fabrics created by knitting machines are of only two forms: rectangles and tubes. The rectangles are made by going back and forth, without turning the fabric, and without increasing or decreasing stitches. The tubes are made by going around and around a tube. These are where knitting's strengths lie, but not so with crochet.
