Internal or external regulator doesn't matter. you can see if it's putting out by running a voltmeter across batt terminals with car running also if it runs with batt disconnected or generates a magnetic feild, it's working. . If it's an older external, you can even change to internally regulated type with the right adapter. if you need to know stock output, need vehicle info.
