if it is like a 97 there are just 2 hoses and 3 bolts to remove. if you are replacing the pulley with a new one dont worry about removing the old pulley. if you are trying to use the old pulley i'd be very carefull on how you try to remove it. It is a plastic pulley with a aluminum hub and the grip ring that the puller fits in breaks off very easily. I would suggest having a dealer shop remove it for you but i'd bet you would want to replace it anyway due to heat weakening the plastic and it breaking on you going down the road like mine did.
just use the holes in the pulley to slip your socket through and remove the 3 bolts and it pops right off. good luck with it hope this has helped
I just completed this pain in the rear project, although it is not too difficult. Start by removing the fan shrowd (SP), unbolting it I should say, b/c you cannot remove it until you unbolt the clutch/fan assembly. To remove clutch/fan assembly they make a wrench to fit the large nut at the rear of the fan, make sure you leave the serpentine belt on to provide tension on the large nut. If you cannot break the nut free you can use a center punch on the edge of the nut on hit it with a hammer to break the nut free. After loosening the nut, remove the fan/clutch assembly and pull it up and out with the fan shrowd all at once (easy this way, to get the fan and shrowd out of the way!) Next disconnect the hoses from the water pump, nothing is bolted onto the water pump so you do not have to remove any accessories(Alternator,Power Steering pump, etc.) This water pump will come right of after removing fan and shrowd. Use a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar or ratchet and place it in the 1/2 inch slot on the front of the tensioner puller that puts tension on the serpentine belt. Turn the tensioner pully until the belt is loose enough to remove (IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A BELT ROUTING DIAGRAM UNDER YOUR HOOD REMEMBER THE ROUTING OF THE SERPENTINE BELT, VERY IMPORTANT!!!!) Remove the bolts on the water pump, place a bucket on the ground under the water pump to catch any radiator fluid that is lost. Remove old water pump. Clean old gasket material off the front of engine where water pump bolts on. Line up new gasket that comes with new water pump onto the new pump and place the water pump bolts through the holes, this will help in holding the gasket in place as you align new pump into position on engine. Tighten bolts on new pump,But not too too tight, you do not want to crush new gasket so much that it causes the new pump to leak. Use reverse process for installing hoses back onto new pump, serpentine belt.fan and shrowd. REMEMBER IT IS A PAIN TO GET ALL OF THE AIR OUT OF THE COOLANT SYSTEM IN THESE JEEPS FOR SOME REASON SO RUN THE HEATER AND KEEP CHECKING THE RADIATOR LEVEL A COUPLE OF TIMES B/C IF YOU DO NOT THE Jeep WILL OVERHEAT DUE TO NOT ENOUGH COOLANT/WATER IN SYSTEM. ENJOY IT TOOK ME ABOUT 4 HOURS TO COMPLETE THIS PROJECT!!!!!
If you can't detect a leak but if you have white smoke (steam) coming out of the exhaust, you may have a blown head gasket or a cracked cylinder head.
Failed water pump bearing.

You can tell where the water pump is located by finding where the mechanical fan is bolted to. If you want to change the water pump, the fan and fan shroud must be removed.

The water pump is on the front center of the engine.
Drain the water coolant from the engine. Remove the water hoses. Remove the front engine cover. Remove the retaining nuts from the water pump. Reverse the process to install the new water pump.
