The same way you groom a real horse. If its in the winter like right now, you take a curry comb and brush him/her down. Then just brush their mane out with a brush. If you know how to groom any horse, then that's how you would groom a Shetland Pony.

OK, I love these questions! :) Hope this helps! If you horse is in a stall or out in pasture, this is for both.

When I say scoop, I mean 12 cups of grain. Depends on season

Floating is a part of Dentist work on a horses teeth, should be done 1-2 times a year

Horse shoeing and trimming is on the horse's hoofs; this should be done 2 times a year

Going to the vet for deworming, shots, and checkups is also necessary. Try going to the vet at least 2 times a year.

Groom, means to curry, brush etc. This forms a relationship with your horse, and helps to find scrapes, injuries etc

Horses that stay in a barn, or in a stable

Winter and Fall(give horse his/her food two times daily)

I would give him/her 3 flakes of hay in the morning and the evening. You don't have to give your horse grain, Shetland ponies do fine without grain, but I would in the winter, because the only way a horse really keeps warm, is if he/she has food in her/his stomach! If you do choose too, give her one scoop. Keep water available at all times! Clean stall once a day, to prevent foundering and other things. Groom daily, or as much as possible.

Summer and Spring(give horse his/her food one time daily)

Do the same things for summer and spring as for winter and fall, but fill water daily, Groom daily, since winter coat is shedding, you can give her/him ½ a scoop of grain and 2 flakes of hay.

Horses that are in a paddock or pasture

Winter and Fall (give food two times daily)

Have water available daily, have shelter, and make sure if it snows of sleets, crack the ice on the water trough, to make water available. Groom daily.

For food, 1 scoop of grain, and 2 flakes of hay

Spring and Summer (Give food one time in a day)

Have water available daily, and fill daily. Groom daily, because winter coat is shedding, and to prevent burs.

For food ½ a scoop of grain, and 1-2 flakes of hay.

CHECK FENCES REGULARLY!! And make sure have locks on gates, of something that can not open with a push etc. Shetland ponies tend to have smart minds and can open fences, untie ropes etc.

If planning to ride the horse

Horse trimming, shoeing, floating, is all necessary for riding

Shetland ponies have the same need as any other horse would. Basically, they need shelter from the elements, food & water, vet & farrier care, etc.
