Until the baby's cord stump falls off you have to sponge bathe the baby. Make sure the room is warm before undressing the baby & gather all of your supplies ahead of time....a bowl of warm soapy water, and a bowl of clean warm water, two wash cloths, a towel, a fresh diaper & the clothes you are going to put the baby in, plus any lotions you are going to apply. I suggest giving a sponge bath on your bed, lying the baby on a thick absorbant towel in the center of the bed and gently washing from the cleanest areas to the dirtiest areas (face to butt), then use a different washcloth and the clean water to rinse the baby off. Apply lotion, the diaper & re-dress. Newborns only need to be washed every other day or every third day. Once the cord stump has fallen off you can give the baby a regular bath, immersing everything but the baby's head in the water & cleaning in the same manner. Some people choose to bathe the baby when they wake up for the day others choose to do it at night before bed. That is your own personal decision to make.
