Ultimately, you could replace the whole unit with an aftermarket unit but it wouldn't be cheap. As you're already aware, the stereo system is kind of built in with various other things in the dash. Anything is possible of course if you're willing to spend some money but by the time you install even a basic aftermarket unit you're probably looking at several hundred bucks because of the adapter kit that you'd have to use for that install - that adapter kit alone probably would run you $150-$200.

there was a TSB (technical service bulliten) realsed about static elctricity causeing the CD player to "cut out" check the fuse, disconect your battery for 30 seconds, then check to see if it works again. or take it to Mazda, they'll give it a once over and determine if the CD module needs replacement
How do you change a CD player in a Nissan micra

Remove the cd player decorative cover. Remove the cd player retaining screws. Remove the wiring harness from the back of the cd player.
once a CD is stuck in the player, the player is no good. to take the player out,you have two covers on each side of the player covering a pair of holes. you need to purchase these removal pins from an auto part store like oreilly's or a Mazda dealership can remove for you sometimes for free. to remove the CD, you will have to remove the top half of the screws of the player and remove the CD hold down
