Two things can happen. One is a general winter warming caused by particulates in the air. Refer to http://earthobservatory.NASA.gov/Features/Volcano/ . alternatively, large eruptions will blanket the sun for months & stop solar radition reaching the earth (mainly the sea 73% of the area). It has been said to cause some small ice ages. Obviously the earth is cooling slowly & less volcanic activity appears to be the case over the millenia.

Explosive volcanic eruptions often release large amounts of sulfur dioxide, which reacts with moisture to form tiny droplets of sulfuric acid into the upper atmosphere. These droplets reflect sunlight back into space, reducing the amount that reaches the surface to warm the planet.

A volcanic eruption often releases clouds of dust and particles that float in the air, often remaining for several days and sometimes weeks. These particles reflect the sun's radiation, preventing the heat reaching the surface of the earth. As a consequence the earth can experience a global cooling for some days till the skies clear.
