Expression through Written WordWrite from the heart always! Even if it is non-fiction, a writer must put him/herself in the shoes of the character(s) portrayed and put down his/her own thoughts. One trick is for a writer to use some of the personalities of acquaintances and twisting it a little. Writers should try to write what they know about.

Research is a MUST on any subject you are writing about whether it be fiction or non-fiction. Many people are inclined to overlook the need for sufficient and careful research for fiction. If a work of fiction is set in a place and time that the writer doesn't know well, many readers are very irritated (perhaps unduly so) by minor factual inaccuracies. If a short story or novel were set in the place where you live and the landmarks weren't in the right place, how would you react?

  • Example: If the story occurs in unfamiliar countries, it is crucial to do research on those countries or the book will never stand a chance of an editor reviewing it.
  • Example: If a novel is set in London and has a character walking down Whitehall from Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square; it will ruin the writer's efforts to get buildings in the wrong order or those that would appear on the right appearing on the left.
