One way would be to install a new radar system called Fazed array radar ( not too sure of the spelling). It would have radars in strategic locations around the USA to give muched more advanced warning for tornado's and even give us advanced warning against sudden missile attacks. It also has its place in the air. With this radar, what happened on Sept 11, never would have occurred. It gives a 3d radar image that cannot be turned off. That's how the terrorists were able to get through. They simply turned off their beacon! we were unable to track them. The Government knows of this technology and will not give the funding? You should harass your Congressman if you live in a vulnerable area. No one should be dying from Tornado's with this advanced technology. What is the matter with the Government? They would rather supply aide after then prevent? Does this make sense? I guess with this new Government it does? Someone should put this on the cover of TIME magazines or something? Why is it not made more public? I hope this doesn't get me in trouble with the Gov. Next thing you know, I will be audited for spilling this.

For a long term forecast, forecasters look for a number factors. First, they look at the movements of different air masses. If a warm, moist air mass collides with a cold one or a dry one, thunderstorms will probably form. Second they look for a condition called wind shear. This is when the speed and/or direction of the wind changes with altitude. Wind shear can turn ordinary thunderstorms into supercells, the type of storm that produces most tornadoes.

On the short term, forecasters look for rotation in a storm. This roatation can develop into a tornado.

We look for 2 things...Instability and Wind Shear...Instability is a measure of rising air potential. Since thunderstorms form from rising air, we first have to have an unstable atmosphere (instability) so that thunderstorms can even develop. Wind shear is a measure of the change in wind speeds and direction with height in the atmosphere. In order for a thunderstorm to produce a tornado, you typically need strong winds throughout the atmosphere that change direction as you go upward....Anytime we see instability and good wind shear meeting together, we know that the potential for tornado development is there.

Having lived 20 years in "Tornado Alley", I assure you that THERE IS NO WAY to predict the path of a tornado.

The general direction of the storm can be tracked, but the rest is guess work.

TO AVOID a tornado is to LOVE A TORNADO.

The day in reality, turned out to be sunny and lively. This morning, too, was a bright and sunny one. The narrator considers the forecast reporting to be a thing of no importance.

How is a thunderstorm forecast?

This is a very complex process. Early in the morning the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK begin looking at several forecast models to see where thunderstorms will occur...as well as the local NWS office. Convective Avabilbe Potential Engery, or CAPE models, show where and how powerful a thunderstorm is or will be (http://rap.ucar.edu/weather/model/displayMod.php?var=ruc_sfc_cape&hours=hr01hr12).
