Define a y plan central heating system?

The reason this system is called a 'Y' plan is because of the shape of the 3 port valve.Heated water from the boiler is diverted to the hot water coil or the radiators depending on which service the programmer is asking for and which thermostat is calling for heat. The 3 port valve also acts as a switch to turn on heating system components. Therefore you need a certain sequence of switches to work in order for the system to operate. For example with radiators:1. The programmer reaches a timed period where the radiators require heat.2. The programmer activates a live supply to the room thermostat.3. If the room is cold then the thermostat will switch this live supply to the motor in the three port valve.4. The three port valve will motor over to open the radiator water outlet. (Takes about 10 seconds)5. When the valve opens it switches a separate live supply which feeds the boiler and pump.6. Boiler and pump receive live supply and operate. Soon you should feel some hot water in your radiators. The three port valve has 2 live supplies to motor it one way or the other depending on what the system is calling for: hot water or hot radiators or both.

How do you turn off the hot water?

go to where your boiler is and there will be a lever. or a turn knob.Do not turn off the water supply to a boiler.Normally water is heated by a tank (Cylinder) or a tank-less coil or an indirect heater.Unless you know the heating source ask a professional as the very last thing you need is a "boiler" to dry fire and cause a melt down and possible explosion

Can i light my fire with back boiler if mains water is off?

Not a good idea. Many of those stoves with a water heating coil on the back rely on constant supply of water to prevent overheating the water piping. Without that, you could warp or damage the water coil.

Can you switch off mains water supply and still use central heating?

no.

Does the boiler heat the water at first then supply it to the hot water tank?

No, a hot water tank heats water by itself.

How does a home heating boiler work?

A home heating boiler is a woodburning water heating system that can potentially save you money on natural gas. If you cut your own wood and have an ample supply to burn, then a home heating boiler might be a great cost effective option.

How do you use heat energy?

We use natural gas from a main supply, feeding a central heating boiler. This supplies hot water and water filled radiators throughout the house. The boiler is rated at 80,000 BTU/hour. We also have a gas supplied fireplace with artificial coals in the main sitting room, for the evenings in the winter.

Can you connect a central heating boiler without the tank in the roof ie can you connect it to mains?

Yup called a diaphragm tank and NOT connected to the domestic supply

Difference between a boiler and water heater?

A hot water heater is the storage tank of water that is responsible for the supply of hot water to the many fixtures in the house, such as showers and sinks. It does NOT supply heat for the home itself. There are two basic types of water heaters, one that runs on gas or some other fuel and one that runs on electric. A boiler on the other hand IS responsible for the heating of a home itself. Water or steam in a boiler reach much higher temperatures than the water in a hot water tank and therefore its used for heating and not drinking water or potable water. In a steam system for heating, pipes run throughout the house from the boiler carrying steam that eventually gives off its heat at the many radiators. In a hydronic system for heat, smaller pipes carry hot water to various baseboards around the house that release the heat using circulator pumps to push the water through and back to the boiler.

Is it possible to change the temperature of a water boiler the safe setting is 120 degrees and I want to know if a water boiler can be changed to that setting?

Boiler should be set at max temperature of 180 degrees for proper heating temperature. 120 degrees is temperature for domestic hot water, not heating temperature. Yes, to answer question, but not recommended.Improved answer. -If you are referring to the hot water heater that gives water to your hot faucets this is not generally known as a 'boiler' (a boiler is for hydronic heating) Your faucet supply can be turned down to any setting between 110 and 160. Normal setting is 130-135. with small children it should be 120. - on most heaters there is an adjustment knob on the gas regulator or the lower electric element . It's well marked and easy to adjust.

How is water a power supply?

Water is a power supply because it is used in power plants. The water is inside the boiler and the boiler is heated to make the water turn into steam. The steam is what makes the power.
