look on the tranny there is a little arm switch that you can click all the way down to put the vehicle in park. you may need a new shifter cable and/or the clips to hold it in place. also look in the steering column to ensure the cable is still in place there aswell. im going through the same problem as i type lol

A lot of Mazda' s will do that. It has nothing to do with the brake. You need to crack the wheel. What I mean by that is to pull the stering wheel hard left, then hard right until the shifter unlocks. Some times this can takes some time but its the only way to free up the shifter. My self and my son between us have had 6 Mazda's and at any given time one of them has been stuck in neutral. The first day I picked up my new Mazda truck it did it, I called the dealer in a panic, he told me to do this (in 1989) and it has never failed. I love my Mazda.
