The colonists saw themselves as British so they had no feelings about the "British". They also fought in the French and Indian war. In fact, Washington was a young British officer and that is where he gained his military experience. So, there was no "them or us" until the American Revolution and even then most of the colonies still thought of themselves as British. That is one reason it is so silly that everyone thinks Revere yelled the "British are coming" because it would be like us yelling "the Americans are coming". He didn't do that and it only comes from Longfellow's poem written in 1860.

The French and Indian war led to the many Acts which were put on the colonists by British Parliament (such as: tea, stamp, sugar, etc.) They thought they shouldn't be taxed if they didn't even have a say in who taxed then/couldn't vote.."no taxation without representation"; those are some ways in which the colonists became unhappy.

The colonists felt very angry because they thought the British were being very oppressive. The colonists then tried resisting the British, such as The Boston Tea Party.
