Spain dropped out when Mexico defeated Spain. The US and Great Britain agreed to share Oregon. The US citizens wanted to farm and the British wanted to hunt for furs. Finally the market for furs had gone down and their were more Americans in Oregon. President Polk believed in manifest destiny so he wanted Britain to give Oregon to us. Some even demanded more: 54' 40" or fight! they said. But no one really wanted to go to war over it. So basically it was a "Polker Bluff" and Great Britain agreed to give the US almost everything the US asked for.
The United States attained Oregon by creating a compromise with Britain in 1846. Oregon was to be divided at the latitude 49 degrees North. The Americans received anything south of that division line. This was called the "Oregon Territory." From 1859 - 1890, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho was created out of the Oregon Territory.
The territory was split with Britain getting the northern half.(studyisland) but right <3
Simply, Americans acquired the Oregon territory as a means of agreement/deal with the British in 1846 while K.Polk was president
The US and Britain settled their claims to the oregon country by the territory being split with britain getting the northern half.

Britian, Russia, Spain and the United States all had competing claims to Oregon.
The dispute over the northern boundary of the U.S. claim to the Oregon Territory was was settled in the Treaty of Oregon of 1846, during the presidency of James K. Polk. The treaty established the boundary between British Canada and the U.S. at 49-degrees latitude. -- Contributed by Ray Kovach, Chicago, IL
