More slaves were needed to keep up with the increased demand for cotton.
The invention of the cotton gin contributed to the rising tensions between the North and South. After the cotton gin was invented, the demand for cotton grew because it could be de-seeded faster. Well...who picked the cotton? Slaves. More cotton meant more slaves.
Another reason tensions grew was because of tarriffs (which was an indirect result of the cotton gin.) The industrial cotton manufactoring companies were in the North. The South would send their cotton to the North. Congress passed high tariffs to help American manufactoring. The tariffs were good for the Northern industry but consumers, including Southerners, had to pay more for the cloth. This caused another tension.
