The animosity or allied-making overtures of both communist and democratic nations towards their neighbors during the Cold War resulted in very strong ties between some, and great divisions between others.

And there was also fear. The threat of nuclear Holocaust, was very real around the world, even in no-nuclear nations. Everyone was watching what was about to happen. Would there be war or peace? No one knew.

The standoff between USA and USSR during 'The Cold War' effected the international diplomatic relations. The clear divide between west and east was evident in the foreign relations between US backed countries and socialist leaning states. Cold war also gave birth to global conflicts like Vietnam War, Korean War and Cuban missile crisis and Afghan war. These conflicts further deteriorated the relations between nations in opposing camps.

The practice of "containment," which was proposed by George Kennan, was the American's view on Communism. During this time period, America was going through another Red Scare, and used the policy of containment to "contain" Communism, meaning not let it spread. This was backed up by pieces of legislature such as the Truman Doctrine (financial aid for Turkey and Greece) and the Marshall Plan (aid for numerous countries). Also the Korean War is an example of using force to contain Communsim.
