At first there a compromise between the supporters of Caesar (the caesarians) and his opponents (the optimates) was reached. However, a conflict between the Mark Antony, the leader of the Caesarians, and the optimates developed. The senate sent troops which defeated Marc Antony at the Battle of Mutina. After this three leading Caesarians, Marc Antony, Lepidus and Octavian formed an Alliance, which historians call the Second Triumvirate (three-man alliance). The triumvirs decided to fight Brutus and Cassius, the leaders of the conspiracy to murder Caesar, who had fled to the eastern territories of Rome to rally military support there. This led to the Liberatores Civil War, in which the triumvirate defeated the Brutus and Cassius and their optimate forces
