The Spanish were devastated after losing the Spanish- American War, in which they lost their last overseas colonies. They responded by questioning their identity as a nation and as a people because their empire was no more. If they were no longer the Spanish Empire, what were they? A group of authors, known as the Generation of '98, which included Miguel de Unamuno, wrote short stories and novels that concerned themselves with the themes of the past, existentialism, identity, and the passage of time. They attempted in their literature to renew and rediscover the identity of the Spanish people.
