Why did the roman republic collapse?

Rome declined for a variety of reasons. First, they had grown too large to effectively govern. Rome was also suffering from considerable internal pressures. There were so many religions within the borders that it was hard to feel a sense of unity with your fellow citizens. There were also several times the Black Plague killed significant numbers within the Empire; because of this Rome was forced to rely on outsiders for maintaining it's military might. These barbarians demanded more and more benefits in order to keep their loyalty. Rome had also developed a significant welfare state, where every citizen was entitled to at least some free food every day, publics baths, etc. Large amounts of the Imperial treasury were dedicated to maintaining the armies and the corn/bread dole for the people. This left little money in case of an emergency. Outside the Empire there was an increased number of migrating people fleeing into Roman territory, often violently, trying to find a better life for themselves.

There is sort of two reasons for it as it was not an instant change.

It started when Julias Caesar conquered Rome during a civil war. He then set up people he trusted in certain offices and made himself the sole consul. Normally there were two consuls and together they would choose which actions to make but by being the only one he basically became the dictator. He was then assassinated by a group of senators.

After this, Octavian, Julias's nephew found out that he had been adopted as Julias's son. He won a civil war against Antonio and the senators rewarded him by making him the sole consul. They slowly kept giving him more and more power because he was such a great ruler and people were grateful. This is when The Roman Empire was made and The Republic collapsed. With supreme power he became Emperor and earned the title Augustus which is how people now know him. Unfortunately the supreme power was eventually inherited by a bunch of dummies down the line and the Empire came tumbling down too!

The western part of the Roman Empire fell under the weight of the invasions by the Germanic peoples who eventually took over all of its lands except for Italy.
