Graft and other forms of political corruption and as one writer states "grumpy old men" caused the decline of the republic. The graft and payoffs speak for themselves. The aristocratic families were determined to hold on to power and have things according to tradition. Tradition meaning keeping power to themselves. They simply could not change with the times. The result of this attitude was the end of the republic and the aristocrats losing just about all their powers under the principate.
