The term the fall of Rome refers to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire, rather than the city itself, which was never conquered.

This was a process which took several decades. The process was determined by several factors. It was precipitated by the invasions by the Germanic peoples (the Vandals, the Sueves) and the Alans (who were Iranian speakers) who invaded the empire and took over north-western Africa and part of Spain, the Alemanni who took over Switzerland and northwester France and the Burgundians who settled in east France. The loss of the agricultural rich territory in Africa lead to a significant loss in revenue for the Roman government.

The Visigoths, another Germanic people, who had been allowed to settle in the eastern part of the Roman Empire and then moved to southwestern France, took advantage of the situation to take over Hispania (Spain and Portugal).

The Romans lost political unity. There were usurpations and infighting which made it difficult to respond to the invasions effectively. There was also a failure by the combined fleet of the western and eastern part of the Roman Empire to dislodge the Vandals from Africa. It ended in disaster and was very costly.

The Roman army became reliant on Germanic soldiers and two Germanic commanders-in chief of the Roman army installed puppet emperors (three by Ricimer, one by Gundobad and one by Orestes). Amidst this political instability, the reign of the last emperors was short.

First of all the Roman Empire didn't really fall all at once. It was split in half because of Germanic barbarians into East and West. The West Empire fell before the East. The East flourished because of its new capital city at Constantinople. (VERY important city.) This gave rise to the Byzantium.

Reasons why West Rome fell:

1. Originally, Rome had a very centralized military for control. But you need to pay the soldiers. How would you get that money? Tax the people, of course. But you also can't tax them too much because they'd revolt. So you need to distract the people.

The higher classes used Beer and Circus to distract them. They were practically holidays where you watch things like gladiator fights etc. Did you know by the time they fell more than 1/2 of the days in the year were holidays? The work was put of the slaves. And slaves are the WORST workers. So people are losing $! You CAN'T TAX (much)!

One example of this happening is that when the White Huns invade Rome, Romans would bribe the enemies to stay away. This shows they would rather have paid the tributes than their army.

2. Epidemics: With the silk roads and all that jazz, disease surfaced. They killed tons of people...

3. Power Struggles: generals struggle. They were called the Barracks Emperors and killed to take the throne. That's not gonna last very long is it?

4. Christianity: Some say Christianity divided up the empire (Romans persecuted them before and you need some unity in an empire), but it's just a theory.

5. Failure of Aqueducts: With no water coming in cities, people abandon them. Well, unless you want to die of thirst.

6. Invasions of the Huns cause Germanic invaders to attack Rome. (Goes also to #1)

Imagine it like this: The invasions are the puncture in a rotten apple- it looks whole on the outside. It explodes and you can see all the rotten stuff inside.

(ALWAYS IN EMPIRES: Land distribution and trade network problems help cause downfall)

Germanic Invaders invade empire

Empire relies on foreign soldiers to defend & protect it`s borders

Invaders steal, disrupt, trade, and destroyed farms and cities

Cities and towns build walls to protect themselves

Tax Collectors cannot pay taxes for the empire

Diocletian split empire into two parts:

Rome and Byzantine Empire? Emperor Abandons Rome from the East
There are many reasons and many theories as to how the Roman empire fell. It would take an entire book to list them all. The best answer to your question would be that the Western part of the empire succumbed to pressures from within and from without over a period of time.

The western part of the Roman Empire fell under the weight of the invasions by the Germanic peoples. The eastern part of the roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years.

When did the Western Roman Empire fall?

The most commonly used date is 476, but other dates are also used. Some historians just say 5th century, or the second half of the 5th century. Clearly it was a long, drawn out affair. The East Roman Empire survived until 1453. The name we use for it is the Byzantine Empire, but that name was never used at the time, and they were nearly always called the Roman Empire during the Middle Ages.
