Several important factors contributed to the development of the New England and Middle Colonies of North America in the 17th century and beyond. One the most important was economic, with settlements in both regions being established for the sake of trade between the New World and the Old World, with ambitions also active to locate trade-routes to the Far East across the North American continent.

IMPROVED ANSWER:

Known as the Domination of England, a group of English colonies were united by King James II of England in 1686. The colonies in domination were Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Plymouth, and Rhode Island. King James believed that the colonies could function better under a single government. However, this would mean that the colonists would have no voice in the government. James was removed as king in 1688, and the domination broke up a year later.

The New England Federation was organized in 1643. The four colonies included Massachusetts, Plymouth, Connecticut, and New Haven. They established the title, "United Colonies of New England."

They worked to solve boundary disputes and to meet the increased danger of attacks by the Dutch, French, and Indians. Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island were excluded from membership for political and religious reasons.
