No one exactly knows what caused this massive, successful civilization to come to an end. There will never be a 100 % known answer. There are many theories as to what happened. One of them is that they were living in a volcanic region where one erupted. If this were to happen, the lands would be blanketed with ash and this would have forced the Mayans to move their entire civilization. Some say it was because of a strong unknown upheaval. Others say that the Mayans went against their Gods and forced themselves to starve and burn their temples. One other is that tehre was a dramatic temperature change where the farmers could not adapt and this caused them all to starve as the crops would not grow. Hope this helps :)

It is generally accepted that a destructive agricultural policy destroyed the Mayan civilization, causing them to abandon their great cities and return to a simpler life in the Yucatan jungles, which is where the Mayans continue to live today.
