In the sixteenth century when Martin Luther first led his revolt against the Church, it was accepted practice that everyone (save Jews) in Europe were the same religion as the prince of that particular country. The Peace of Westphalia tried to stop the political wars by saying that if the prince of a territory left the Church, then any who wanted to remain Catholic had to leave his territory and immigrate to a territory ruled by a Catholic prince.
Simply put, they left us, not a divide, its apostasy.
People disagreed on many fundamental beliefs. When someone rejects a doctrine of the Catholic Church, they are no longer Catholic. Many people were also very unhappy with the corruption of a few influential members of the Catholic clergy. This corruption was caused by men who became priests and bishops for the political power they would get, rather than for a love of God and his Church. The Pope also often paid to much attention to running the Papal States and not enough attention to the Church. People were calling for a reform to end the problems within the Church but it came too late - Luther had already broken away and started the first Protestant religion and was followed by many more. By the time the Council of Trent (one of the greatest councils in Church history) was finally called and managed to repair most of what was wrong with the Church, there had already been many violent conflicts between Catholics and Protestants.
doesnt matter. Religion has to concentrate on today. The history gives lessons for good and bad decisions, but we need to use our energie with conscience to develop our future forward.
