Between 1870 to 1920, the new immigrants coming to the United States had shifted from western European protestants to immigrants from eastern and southern Europe. They came from Russia, Italy, Poland, Greece, and China. They were much poorer than previous immigrants had been, and were Greek Orthodox, Catholic, and Jewish by faith. They added their distinctly different cultures, foods, celebrations and qualities, to make the United States a much more diverse country. Unfortunately, America didn't like the new immigrants, who seemed so different from them, and changed from a welcoming country to one with distinctly anti-immigrant sentiments.
