Pennsylvania was a proprietary colony, along with Delaware (which Penn also owned) and Maryland. A proprietary colony is defined as a type of colony that was not controlled by the king, but someone who was granted land by the King. Penn asked King Charles II to repay a debt owed to his family by granting him land in America. In 1681, the King granted William Penn land.

"Sylvania" means woods, so the land was named Pennsylvania, which means Penn's woods.

Because his family had done something for the country of England and so the king rewarded William for this. He gave him a large chunk of land, which is now Pennsylvania.

William got land from king george the sixth because his parents lended money to the king and the king gave William the land to pay back the parents debt because they died.
