It was a legendary puzzle sent down by the gods, a knot intricate that whoever untied it would becomes "Lord of Asia" In Maniac Magee, there is a similar puzzle called the Cobble's Knot. As with Alexander, the protagonist of the book successfully unties it, and later unites a divided city.
