Oprah did not start her career expecting to host a talk show; in fact, she began as a news reporter at a Nashville radio station, and eventually worked as a TV news reporter. But while she had a pleasant personality, she had problems remaining neutral and unemotional about some of the news stories she covered. It was suggested to her that rather than covering news, she might be more suited to doing a talk show. She tried it, and found she liked interviewing guests and chatting with them much more than she liked covering news.

She started the show in 1984.
But when she gained popularity, the show was replaced by the "Oprah Winfrey Show" in 1986.
The first official episode of the show was on Sept.8, 1986..
