A great people, at the focus of history for centuries (the Germans) find themselves humbled, bled dry for reparations, and with few prospects for employment or national dignity anywhere they look (post World War I). Along comes a skillful orator who assures these people they can be rich, proseprous, and free of the "real" cause of all their miseries - "International Jewry" (a "problem" essentially created by the orator himself). Desperate enough to clutch at straws, the people line up behind this mesmerizing speechifiyer. Nazism had arrived.
