Answer
John was called at an early age to be a forerunner for Jesus Christ. The scriptures tell us that while on his mission he lived on honey and locust. The scriptures do not so that he had job as his responsibilty of foretelling the comming of Christ was his prime responsibility. Because of this he never married, but devoted what short life he had to fullfiling his forodained responsibility.
That's easy, John whose real name is Yochanan, being a Levite and his father a priest, which makes him a priest and a Nazarite on top of it, he would have been studying the Torah (aka the Law) from the time he could understand how to talk, that's what Orthodox Jews do, they study, study and do more studying, same today until it's time to leave home. But John also could never touch grapes, grape juice or drink any wine all his life. That was his life until he went out into the wilderness and finally came to his cousin Yeshua (aka Jesus) then dies for telling Herod off for having his brother's wife, which is against Torah (aka Law) and Herod being part Jewish should have kept Torah!

John the Baptist sacrificed a comfortable lifestyle and worldly recognition to live in the wilderness, preach repentance, and prepare the way for Jesus Christ. He lived a humble life, eating locusts and honey, and ultimately gave his life for his beliefs, being martyred by King Herod.
It is quite likely that John the Baptist spent his entire life in the area around Jerusalem.
John the Baptist was not a Christian, as we typically think of Christians. John lived and died before Christ's death and resurrection, so he had no opportunity to become a Christian, per se. However, John the Baptist clearly lived a life exclusively dedicated to obedience to God, which is obviously a virtue Christians are commanded to exhibit.
Tradition has it that John the Baptist was an orphan and adopted by the Essenes who are Hebrew monks. They wore sackcloth and lived off the land. That is why John the Baptist had such peculiar habits.
