Another answer, equally correct is that he and his wife had decided to cut short their extended honeymoon and return home, due to the fact that Madeleine had discovered while abroad, that she was pregnant. And so, the couple, wanting their baby to be born in New York, returned earlier than anticipated and hence, booked passage on the RMS Titanic.
