He persuaded his Cabinet to declare a state of emergency and end individual freedoms, including freedom of press, speech, and assembly. Individuals lost the right to privacy, which meant that officials could read people's mail, listen in on telephone conversations, and search private homes without a warrant.

Hitler also relied on terror to achieve his goals. Lured by the wages, a feeling of comradeship, and the striking uniforms, tens of thousands of young jobless men put on the brown shirts and high leather boots of the Nazi Storm Troopers (Sturmabteilungen).Called the SA, these auxiliary policemen took to the streets to beat up and kill some opponents of the Nazi regime. Mere fear of the SA pressured into silence other Germans who did not support the Nazis.

Edit (codnchips4u)

Hitler became the chancellor in January 1933; he was working closely with Hindenburg but had no real power. Although he had 2 other Nazis in the cabinet he could be sacked at any time. Also at this point, Hitler didn't have a majority in the Reichstag and had to bring in help from elsewhere.

On the first of February Hitler managed to convince Hindenburg to have new elections in the Reichstag, this gave Hitler to gain the majority he needed to change the Weimar constitution. On the 27th of February 1933 the Reichstag is burnt down. A Dutch communist was found at the scene with fire starting equipment. Hitler used the opportunity and blamed the communists and showed everyone how dangerous they were and by the next day 4,000 communists had been arrested.

The next day Hindenburg issued the decree for the protection of people and the state. This meant Hitler could arrest anyone he wanted without trial. Hindenburg said it was to protect from the KPD (the communists). After the fire they hosted the election on the 5th of March. The Nazis gained 288 seats but they didn't get the 2/3rds majority they needed to issue the "enabling act".

Hitler then tried to brainwash the German people by appointing Goebbels as head of the ministry for public enlightenment and Propaganda so he could have total control over the media. Hitler continued with his "brainwashing" by taking all the "alien elements" out of the education system like Jews and non Nazi supporters.

Hitler organised the day of Potsdam which celebrated the opening of the new Reichstag, this was intended to win over more conservative supporters and more importantly the centre part and the army. After wards Hitler joined with the nationalist party to get his 2/3rds majority, he then passed the enabling act granting him emergency powers so he could rule Germany without consulting the Reichstag for 4 years.

On the 14th of July Hitler passed a law on the formation of new political parties. So this stopped other parties from being formed so Germany became a one party state run by the Nazis. Hitler also realised that the church had a lot of power over the German people and could have great influence so he formed an alliance with the Catholic Church and said he wouldn't interfere with them if they didn't interfere with political activity.

On the 30th of June Hitler organised the assassination of a claimed 70 SA members but others predict there was about 400 deaths that night. Hitler realised that Rohm had a lot of power and with a lot of loyal supporters but he couldn't just arrest him without losing support of the SA so he murdered the top SA leaders and accused them of treason.

Two days later Hindenburg died and Hitler appointed himself president of Germany and merges chancellor and president into the same role of 'Fuher' this is when Germany became a Dictatorship and Hitler made the army swear an oath that they would serve him and only him.

That requires much more answer than can be given here. Read chapters 5, 6, and 7 of "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by William L. Shirer. He tells the story very well.

How did Hitler turn Germany into police state after 1933?

Once hitler made germany a 1 party country , He made the german states controlled by the secrete police (The Gestapo)

Was Hitler an important historical figure?

Generally speaking, Adolph Hitler's leadership skills helped his Nazi party come to power and convinced a vast majority of Germans to approve of his actions. By all accounts, the German people believed that Hitler and his party would make Germany a better place. That belief remained during the early part of WW2 when German armies had little trouble in conquering most of Europe. The German peoples' trust however, in Hitler's leadership skills began to diminish when the war began to turn against Germany.

Did Nazi party policies help Hitler rise to power?

No. Hitler came to power primarily on account of the fact that Hitler claimed that he could turn the German economy around. Once in power, he implemented the policies of the Nazi Party which served to improve the economic situation for many Germans, but at the cost of millions of lives that were slaughtered.

What did Adolf Hitler do to take over Germany?

After WW1, Germany was war torn and owed alot of money to alot of countries because of war debts. So naturally Germans were broke as hell. Adolf manipulated pretty much every sorrow Germany had to his party's advantage to get the German people to recognize the Nazi Party as major political power. Since then, he helped fascism get it's start (created by Italians), turn Germany from broken pile of rubble into a world power through brilliant German engineering, and started one of the most famous genocides in recent memory. He lived one hell of a life.

Why did the Nazi's want to take control of Germany?

After WW1, Germany was going through very hard times. Recall: the treaty of verailles. Hitler became a German dictator when he wrote the book: Mein Kamf. He became Chancellor of Germany as German people were desperate and Hitler claimed he could bring Germany back to 'greatness'. A group of German people that were very desperate and thought Hitler was their answer, were the Nazi's. They took control of the government creating a Facist Germany. They believed they could turn Germany into the greatest country under Hitler. Hitler stated in Mein Kampf that groups but mostly the Jewish group were their enemies. This resulted in the Holocaust. They wanted to make Germany great, creating a sense of purity and the Jewish people were supposedly considered the enemies that would stop them from doing this.

When did Hitler gain conterol of Germany?

Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933. But he wasn't all-powerful yet- he still had to answer to the President and to the Reichstag (where the Nazi Party did not hold a majority). On March 23, 1933, Hitler was able to get the Reichstag to pass a constitutional amendment giving virtually all of the government's power to Hitler and his Cabinet. This could be considered the date that Hitler's dictatorship officially started. Over the next year, the Nazis changed the entire government of Germany to fit their beliefs, such as to strengthen propaganda and police, build up the military, and punish Jews and political opponents for existing. This process is known as Gleichschaltung("synchronization").On June 30, 1934, Hitler and his inner circle carried out the "Night of the Long Knives". The few remaining politicians who had opposed Hitler's rise to power were arrested, and generally executed or sent to concentration camps. He also murdered fellow Nazis who were considered a threat to his power, notably Ernst Röhm, the powerful leader of the Nazi Party's private army. Additionally, a small group of Nazis known as "Strasserites" (named after Gregor and Otto Strasser, their leaders) were murdered because they hoped to turn the Nazi Party into a socialist party. On August 2, 1934, President Paul von Hindenburg died of old age. He was the last obstacle to Hitler's total domination of Germany. With him out of the way, Hitler chose not to hold elections to replace Hindenburg; instead, he merged the office of Chancellor with the Presidency, and created the new office of Führer ("Leader"), which only he held.So pretty much any of those dates could be considered the date Hitler gained control of Germany.

The crippling war debt imposed on Germany was disadvantaging German and denying it "it's place in the sun" Refers to part of Hitler's justification for invading and taking new territory or "lebensraum" living space.

Why did Hitler want to become dictator?

Hitler had a dream of ruling countries that were purged of undesirable people and filled with the pure Aryan people groups. He wanted the Third Reich/Nazi Regime to rule 1000 years. He legally assumed the leading position of Germany when the president of Germany died.

Germans political party in power during war?

Until October 1918 Germany didn't have party government. The Kaiser, usually acting on the advice of various figures in the (conservative) political elites, nominated the Chancellor who in turn recommended the other ministers. They then haggled with the political parties in order to get new legislation through Reichstags. In 1914-18 the Reichstag had a considerable range of parties, ranging for the USPD (Independent - that was anti-war - Social Democrats) to the Vaterlandspartei. The largest party was the SPD - the mainstream Social Democrats, but they didn't have a majority.Germans were more like nationalists
