Diego Rivera began his career in Paris around 1909 by entering the Salons. (After having studied in Spain.) He returned home to Mexico D.F. prior to the Revolution of 1910 and his work was seen by President Diaz whose wife bought several paintings. Governor Dehesa of Vera Cruz was his patron which gave him an entree to the Mexican government. He returned to Paris after a year. Although he was accepted in Europe, and was under contract to paint four works a month for a gallery in Paris, his career took off when he returned to Mexico around 1921. You can read about his life in "House on the Bridge: Ten Turbulent Years with Diego Rivera".
