There is some controversy regarding this. I believe as a young lawyer he argued a case which in certain respects favored the view that slaves were property. Moreover some historians argue that the emancipation proclaimations were mere political tactics to make the south look archaic and unethical so that no foreign nation would recognize the confederate govt. Moreover the proclaimations were intended to cause internal strife and rebellions in the south. Perhaps slaves would start a rebellion which of course would hurt the southern cause. Lastly it soldified the northern war aim and gave the north more morale when it was badly needed. Some argue Lincoln didn't make such proclaimations out of ethics but I tend to think he did and also considered the above mentioned factors.
He did not like it. He thought it was wrong and tried to free as many slaves as possible.
