Honourable, Mr Justice Ifkthar Muhammad Chaudhry, The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Islamabad.

Subject: Grant a piece of land to the Christian prisoners, to observe theirreligious rites at the Campus Jail, Lahore

Your Excellency, I wish to draw your attention to a problem faced by the Christian prisoners of the Camp Jail, Lahore. The prisoners of the Christian Community request to enjoy the same rights as provided to other Pakistanis in this camp.

Every country has national or ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities. The minorities aspire to participate in the public, social economic, cultural and religious life of the societies in which they live, on an equal footing with the rest of the population.

UN Member Statesadopted unanimously the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities, an acknowledgment that a gap existed in minority rights protection. The Minority Rights Declaration that States have an obligation to acknowledge and promote the rights of minorities to enjoy their own culture and identities, to profess and practice their own religions.

Quaid-e-Azam in his address to the first Constituent Assembly of Pakistan on 11th August 1947, said: "You are free; you are free to go to your temples, you are free to go to your mosques or any other place of worship in the state Pakistan. You may belong to any religion or caste or creed." The address of Quaid-e-Azam also reflected the spirit of the Madina Charter. He declared the granting of equal rights to all the communities without any discrimination of caste, colour or religion.

Laws of Islam do not harm non-Muslims because Islam protects the rights of non-Muslims because Islam protects the rights of non-Muslims. It is written in Surah-ul-Maida verse 82that "You will find the nearest of them in affection to the belivers whos say "We are Christians", that is because among them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant."

The constitution of Pakistan provides for fundamental rights, which includes freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of information and freedom of religion. These clauses are generally respected in practice. The Christian Community has played a vital role in the creation of Pakistan. But from the history of Pakistan we come to know that Christians are always deprived off their rights.

I want to bring to your kind notice the following Rules and Regulations of the Camp Jail, Lahore:

■ No. 679 Education is required for all the Christian ■ No. 681 Religious education is equal for all ■ No. 475 A special lunch will be served to the Christian prisoners by the jail authority on Christmas and Easter day. The Jail authority is not implementing at all. The camp jail authority allowed to fulfill our religious rites at Barak No.17 just in one room which is enough. It is essential to bring to your notice that request had been presented to the concern authority for looking into the matter but all in vain.

Authorities are also requested to take notice of the following points are linked with:

● to provide the piece of land for the church facilities. ● same facilities to get education as others. ● to get religious education freely as others. ● times of prayers as much as others have. ● Special food should be served on Christmas/Easter ● to provide the bam & oil also. Authorities are requested to take notice of the grievance and take some positive steps to solve this problem and provide us a piece of land for the church that we may practice our religious activities freely Hoping to hear from you soon.
