According to Straight Talk's site, you can "use virtually any compatible or unlocked GSM phone with our Straight Talk SIM service".

Depending on what phone you have or what phone you want to get, I would make sure that is a GSM.

With Straight Talk's "Bring Your Own Phone" program, their SIM cards will only work with an AT&T or T-Mobile compatible or unlocked GSM phone. (Blackberry, and branded TracFone, SafeLink, NET10 or Straight Talk phone will not work with this program)

I've linked to Straight Talk's support page below for your convenience.

What is straight talk?

Straight Talk is a pre-paid phone service that uses the towers of Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint for it's phones. The phone towers you use depend on the phone you purchase. Straight Talk has two pre-paid plans you could put onto your phone. One plan is the $45 plan, which gives you totally unlimited talk, text and internet on your Straight Talk phone. The second plan you could purchase each month from Straight Talk is the $30 plan. It features 1000 minutes to talk with, 1000 texts and 30 MB from the internet on your Straight Talk phone.

Do you have to get a straight talk cell phone with the straight talk plan?

Technically, yes. While Straight Talk is a pay as you go cell phone service, buying minutes is referred to as buying a "plan." (Plans last last between 30 and 365 days, depending on which plan you choose) If you want to ensure that your service is never interrupted between plans, Straight Talk customers can set up "Auto-Refills" - a rescheduled automatic payment to refill your plan on your service end date.

Will your current tracfone work with Straight Talk?

As long as it is a phone that Straight talk supports and the phone came from tracphone or net 10, you can call and get a Straight talk sim card. Just dont tell them that the phone isn't from straight talk. If it's one of their phones they wont know the difference. Just tell them that a friend gave you the phone or something like that and you need a new sim card because it didn't have one.

Can you use any US Cellular contract phone as a prepaid phone?

No. Certain phones will only work with the original wireless provider that you signed with. In other cases, you can use your phone with a prepaid carrier as long as it is unlocked and the cellular networks type matches up. In other words, if your phone is on a GSM network with T-Mobile, you will want to find a prepaid carrier that also operates using a GSM network such as Straight Talk or Net10. The same goes for CDMA devices. Furthermore, in order to use an existing device with a new wireless provider, the new provider must have a "Bring Your Own Phone" or "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOP/D) program. For example Straight Talk allows users with GSM phones to use their unlocked device on Straight Talk's network through the Straight Talk BYOP program. New Straight Talk users will make a one time purchase of a Straight Talk SIM card that, once placed in the phone, will attune the device to Straight Talk's network.
