How can you get discovered as a teen singer songwriter?

Simple enough. Make work, show it every chance you get. Start locally, people who want to be known NOW will be severely displeased. Basically the more you show the more you're known. Galleries are good but they plan these things months in advance. So while trying to get that gallery exhibition show things at public places. I started by asking owners of private businesses to show my work. Most are happy to oblige. Though censorship is an issue that comes into play with certain places. Art fairs etc.. anything and everything. Its about meeting people, and if you've impressed someone enough they may talk about you to someoneone else who perhaps is part of the art world.. etc... just keep showing work. Get to know your market, group shows with other artists.. there are so many ways one can show and promote their work. Remember: in art theres no such thing as over promotion. The more that see it the more that will like it (and hate it).

Ok kid. First, you need an agent. Yes, you kind of have to have one. They know all of the inside people and can tell you when and how to get auditions. Then, depending on where you live, you either send in a tape or travel to that city where the auditions are happening. If you are sending in a tape, make sure you have the right information and know exactly what to do and say. Don't be freaked out by the competition because you're not the only one who can act/sing/dance. Trust me though, you'll get your fifteen minutes of fame.

Take a risk. Apply for American Idol. Place something on YouTube. Find a local free paper and see if any bands are seeking a singer. Get a job singing telegrams. You have to get out there and show your true talent. It's there inside of you. You just need to get that out into the world via whatever means are available.

I am not in the music business myself, but I would say: Start. Maybe it's a good idea if you can get a tape recorder to hum tune ideas that you get, and keep a notebook for lyrics ideas so you can always capture great ideas you have. Then I would definitely say: Read. Read about how others did it successfully, how they started their journey. All librarians LOVE to help people find things like that. If you have the money to get a subscription to a magazine about that subject, maybe a librarian can help you pick out a good one.

If you are in school, maybe try to connect with some other students interested in the same thing and learn from each other. If you think you have a good voice, maybe get an objective opinion from a glee-club teacher or music teacher. If you have the money for music lessons to learn to read music or singing lessons (if necessary) go for it. Most of all, I'd say do not ever be afraid to ask questions and go read and learn about how others who are successful at it have done it. If you live in a city with a local music scene, you could read the local art paper to see if there are local singer songwriters performing. Go to a show if you can and after the show go up and ask the person if they have any advice. Maybe audition for a local group looking for a singer, etc. Again, I'm not in the music business, but in any field, we always learn a lot from other people who have done it before us.

Believe in your dream. Be realistic, but believe in your dream and objectively learn where it can take you. Good luck to you. :)
