What is ping?

Ping is a simple command line network tool that you can use to verify your connectivity to a network.

How does ping help me?

Ping will allow you to quickly determine the status of your connectivity on the network. Ping another computer on your local network to determine if your network connection is functioning properly, then ping an internet resource to determine if your connection to the outside world is functional.

Why should I ping?

Ping will help you determine if your network connection is completely failed, or if you are only isolated from specific networks. For example, if you are suddenly unable to browse web pages, you may have been disconnected from the Internet but still be connected to your local network. You can make this determination by pinging the appropriate local or remote addresses.

Which website should I ping?

You should ping popular web sites that are known to always be there. For example, Yahoo.com or Google.com. These sites have a high level of redundancy in their networks and are most likely to respond.

Should I ping a domain?

Pinging a domain, such as google.com, will test your DNS service. DNS will translate the domain name to an IP address. If your DNS server is unreachable, you will not be able to browse the Internet using standard URL's such as www.yahoo.com

Do I need to ping the same URL more then once?

If you are able to access network resources without any trouble, there is no need to ping, otherwise you might want to run multiple ping tests against the same resource until you can determine that it is available.

Examples:

* ping <computer name>

** this will ping another computer on your local network by name, which will test your lmhosts, WINS, etc.

* ping 192.168.1.1

** this will ping another computer using the IP address of the other machine.

* ping www.google.com

** this will ping a computer by dereferencing it's domain name, and will test your DNS.

* ping /?

** this will display the options for the command

Assuming you understand network programming:

There is a Ping() function that returns a struct describing the result. I'm pretty sure it is in System.Net and that the struct is PingResult
